Today, as part of the Own Our Ottawa campaign, I am highlighting Cornerstone Housing for Women, an organization in Ottawa providing safe and affordable housing.
Tell me a little bit about your organization/initiative.
Cornerstone provides emergency shelter and safe affordable housing for women experiencing homelessness, or at risk of homelessness. We have 62 emergency shelter beds, full every night, and 68 units of safe, affordable housing in three facilities. We are currently renovating the former Jeanne d’Arc Institute on Princeton Avenue into 42 new units of housing in Westboro. We serve more than 500 women every year. We have more than 65 full and part-time staff and almost 300 volunteers. Every year, we provide more than 140,000 nourishing meals.
What do you do to #OwnOurOttawa?
We just launched a crowd-funding campaign for our newest residence, 373 Princeton, which will provide 42 rooms for at-risk women in our community. Whereas our other residences are in the downtown area, this residence is unique in that it has been welcomed into the Westboro community and will provide a true residential hub in one of Ottawa’s up-and-coming neighbourhoods.
Why do you think it’s important to #OwnOurOttawa?
Ottawa is a sought after city for its inclusive nature: families, youth, seniors all call Ottawa home. Although Ottawa is a wonderful place to live, we too have populations at-risk of homelessness, abuse, addictions and more. Thankfully we also have a very supportive city that has for over 30 years joined Cornerstone in providing housing and support services to ensure women in Ottawa can turn their backs on homelessness forever.
If someone wants to get involved or get more information, where can they go?
